Certificate III in Pathology - HLT32607

Overview

The course involves blood collecting, specimen processing, diagnostic and pathology procedures including patient care, OH&S, infection control and medical terminology topics. A current First Aid Statement Of Attainment is required for participants to successfully gain their qualification. Adept Training offers First Aid courses for students at our head office in Harris Park and some other venues - students must book in to a course!

This is a hands-on training course and we encourage participation in class, practical demonstrations and activities. It is essential that participants have the appropriate English skills to complete the course and work effectively in a health care environment.

Students must have a current (within 3 years) First Aid Statement Of Attainment to receive their qualification (this is included in the course).

Prerequisites

You must have English literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Cert III in English, IELTS 5.0 or undertake Adept English Assessment. If you are unsure of whether you are eligible, please contact our office and we can arrange for an interview. We strongly recommend that all students are immunized for Hepatitis A and B before they enroll into the course.

Benefits

Successful completion of the course will qualify participants for employment in medical centres, hospitals or pathology laboratories as a pathology collector or phlebotomist. Certificate III in Pathology - HLT32607 awarded upon completion.

Duration

The course is offered weekends and weekdays and takes between 2 - 3 months to complete.

This unit covers the introductory skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a healthcare setting with patients, clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements.
Work will be within a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures with some accountability for the quality of outcomes.

Contribute to OHS processes - HLTOHS300A

This unit covers general OHS requirements according to legislation and codes of practice, including duties and responsibilities for all parties under the general duty of care.
Work will usually be performed within a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures.

Comply with infection control policies & procedures in health work - HLTIN301A

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required of workers to understand and comply with infection control guidelines. Policies and procedures may be organisational, industry - based and/or legislated.
The unit applies to a wide range of workers in health industry settings reflecting the importance of controlling infection risks and self-protection.

Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately - BSBMED301B

This unit covers the understanding and use of a range of written and oral medical terminology appropriate to the pathology collection industry.

Apply first aid - HLTFA301B

This is the unit Apply First Aid. Students must complete their first aid course in order to gain their Certificate III in Pathology.

Operate efficiently within a pathology specimen collection environment - HLTPAT305B

This unit provides the skills and knowledge to work effectively within a pathology and specimen collection environment. It provides an overview of organisational structure and the procedures of pathology and specimen collection practices.
Work performed requires a broad knowledge base and the ability to apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems. Individuals will take responsibility for their own outputs and limited responsibility for the quantity and quality of output of others.

Perform blood collection - HLTPAT306B

Students wishing to do this training must have access to health care environment for their assessment & meet prerequisites
This unit is concerned with the knowledge and skills required for routine blood collection from a defined client/patient group, and excludes complex blood collection techniques. Work performed requires a broad knowledge base and the ability to apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems.

Identify and respond to clinical risks associated with pathology collection - HLTPAT308B

This unit is concerned with the ability to identify and respond to clinical risks and client/patient reactions associated with pathology specimen collection.
Work performed requires a broad knowledge base and the ability to apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems. All tasks are conducted in accordance with organisational policies and procedures including OHS and infection control guidelines.

Collect pathology specimens other than blood - HLTPAT304B
This unit of competency covers the ability to follow procedures for collection of pathology specimens other than blood from clients and patients for pathology testing. All tasks are conducted in accordance with organisational policies and procedures including OHS and infection control guidelines.

This unit of competency covers the ability to receive and prepare a range of samples for pathology testing.

This unit deals with the cultural awareness required for effective communication and cooperation with persons of diverse cultures.

*If you do not wish to study the complete Pathology Collection course, Perform Blood Collection - HLTPAT306B may be undertaken separately. Students wishing to do this training must have previous experience in a health care environment.
