Overview

The Certificate IV in Pathology builds on the individuals existing skills and gives you the ability to further your knowledge and refine your skills in pathology collection and clinical diagnostic areas. This qualification covers workers who undertake the collection of blood and other pathology specimens for routine and specialized testing. Workers at this level are expected to have an in depth knowledge of pathology procedures and techniques, have excellent customer service skills and be able to work with clients with complex needs. It provides individuals with the opportunity to provide professional excellence in their work place.

This is a hands-on training course and we encourage participation in class, practical demonstrations and activities. It is essential that participants have the appropriate English skills to complete the course and work effectively in a health care environment.

Prerequisites

You must have English literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to Cert III in English, IELTS 6.0 or undertake Adept English Assessment. Students should be able to demonstrate professional excellence at this level and have the strong communication skills. We strongly recommend that all students are immunized for Hepatitis A and B before they enroll into the course.

Students must complete the entrance test and also have the following units from Cert III in Pathology (HLT32607);

* HLTPAT305B Operate efficiently within a pathology & specimen collection environment 
* HLTPAT306B Perform blood collection

There are 9 units to complete this qualification;
3 Compulsory

Implement and monitor compliance with legal and ethical requirements - HLTHIR506B

This unit teaches participants to work within the confines of their legal requirements while attending to clients in a health care setting.

Show leadership in health technical work - HLTHIR405A

Participants will learn how to develop their leadership skills and how to participate in team building and lead others.

Contribute to organisational effectiveness in the health industry - HLTHIR402B

This unit develops the participants understanding of collaborative team work and how to work with the challenges within an organisation to maximise positive outcomes.

2 Mandatory Electives

Collect pathology specimens other than blood for specialised testing - HLTPAT410B

This unit expands on blood collecting and builds the participants understanding and skills in collecting non blood samples for complex testing requirements.

Perform blood collection for specialised testing - HLTPAT411B

This unit covers the collection of blood samples for unusual and specialised testing methods and continues to develop excellent venepuncture techniques.

4 Electives

Perform ECG - HLTPAT407B

This unit allows the participant to learn how to safely, competently and effectively apply an ECG for the purpose of analysis.

Perform holter monitoring - HLTCA402B

This unit builds on the ECG unit and is concerned with the demonstration of technique to satisfactorily apply a holter monitor for a client while adhering to the manufacturers specifications for the equipment.

Measure spirometry/flow volume loop - HLTPAT414B

This unit will enable the participant to appropriately demonstrate skills and techniques to satisfactorily perform spirometry testing for a client.

Recognise healthy body systems in a health care context - HLTAP301A

This unit describes the basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology required to recognise body systems and their components and to identify and refer alterations associated with the functioning of the human body in the context of health care work.
